A Guide to Arabic Script Styles

March 5, 2026 · Nuqtah Studio

Arabic script art is not a single style — it is a family of scripts, each with its own personality and emotional resonance. Understanding these styles helps you choose the perfect look for your home or gift.

Thuluth — The Monumental Script

Thuluth is perhaps the most recognisable style of Arabic script. Its name means "one-third," referring to the proportion of curved to straight strokes. Grand, authoritative, and deeply spiritual, Thuluth has been used for centuries for architectural inscriptions and sacred art.

Best for: Quran verses, sacred phrases, large wall statements. Thuluth commands attention and creates a focal point in any room.

Naskh — The Clear Voice

Naskh is the script most commonly used for printing the Quran. It is valued for its clarity, readability, and balanced proportions. Where Thuluth commands, Naskh communicates — making it ideal for longer texts where every word matters.

Best for: Longer Quran passages, Hadith, detailed compositions. Perfect when you want the words themselves to be the focus.

Diwani — The Elegant Whisper

Developed during the Ottoman era, Diwani is characterised by its flowing, ornate curves and compressed baseline. It was originally used for royal correspondence — and that sense of intimate elegance remains. Diwani feels like a love letter written in ink, though we recreate it with modern pens for contemporary art.

Best for: Names, short phrases, romantic or personal pieces. Ideal for Nikah gifts and family art.

Kufi — The Geometric Foundation

Kufi is the oldest form of Arabic script art, named after the city of Kufa in Iraq. Angular, geometric, and structured, Kufi carries the weight of Islamic artistic history. Modern interpretations of Kufi blend traditional geometry with contemporary minimalism.

Best for: Short words, modern interiors, architectural-feeling pieces. Kufi works beautifully for single-word reminders like Sabr or Shukr.

"Each script is a voice. Thuluth declares. Naskh teaches. Diwani whispers. Kufi anchors."

Choosing the Right Style for Your Piece

When commissioning custom script art, consider the emotional tone you want your piece to carry. A wedding gift might call for the romantic flow of Diwani. A prayer space might benefit from the grand presence of Thuluth. A modern study might find its anchor in Kufi.

If you're unsure, our artist will happily suggest a style based on your words and intentions.
